The Midsummer Festival 2015

Shaded by woodland dunes, withdrawn from the seashore, the crenelated walls of château Hardelot recall the Tudor castles of nearby England. Before the dawn of summer, the shortest night elicits dreams and delights. It is the summer solstice, a unique moment in time where the lines that divide day from night, the real from the imaginary, tend to become blurred. By the ramparts of château Hardelot, stands a temporary theatre composed of canvas and wood. Music is being played, an entente cordiale between two nations.

Editorial

The influence of both France and Great Britain, sometimes enemies, sometimes friends, lies at the heart of the history and heritage of Pas-de-Calais: from Calais lace to the battle of Azincourt where dead soldiers lay across our battle fields, to the second discovery of Shakespeare's First Folio in Saint-Omer towards the end of 2014. It is this historic link that château Hardelot celebrates with its keynote event, the Midsummer festival.Dreaming, dancing, vibrant, this is life. And improving the quality of life in our territory is our Département’s daily mission.Naturally, château Hardelot is intended as a place to serve the people of Pas-de-Calais, a place where cultural excellence needs to be accessible to everyone. The Midsummer festival responds to this ambition by offering a top quality programme, bringing together the best international artists of our time, in an atmosphere designed for exploration and mutual exchanges. We want to inspire in our youngest that taste for discovery. So, every Sunday morning, the Children's corners invite children and their parents to special performance workshops specifically created just for them. The Midsummer Festival is now a cultural event not to be missed, whose fame extends well beyond the boundaries of Pas-de-Calais. Next year, it takes place in the château's new Elizabethan theatre, where it will grow even more, once again demonstrating that culture is important to the development of our territory.Wishing everyone a fantastic festival!

Midsummer in progress

At the dawn of summer, the shortest night elicits our imagination. A temporary theatre is set up close to the ancient ramparts of a Tudor castle on French territory, whilst an Elizabethan theatre, made only of wood, is being built in the gardens. French and English music will meet here.Amongst the musicians from nearby Albion, Handel takes pride of place. The magnificent voices of Nathalie Stutzmann (19th June) or Emöke Barath (27th June) sing his heroines, queens and princesses, or his sly or treacherous anti-heroes. French music, for its part, is championed by Magdalena Kozená, Emmanuelle Haïm and her ensemble "Concert d'Astrée (20th June).Historical Franco-British figures populate the festival. Thus “Doulce Mémoire” revives the splendours of the court of Francis 1st, Henry VIII's legendary rival (5th July) and the ensemble “A Deux Violes esgales” focusses on the figure of Henrietta of France, the wife of Charles 1st (21st June). The mythical and tragic Mary Stuart, first Queen of France, then Scotland, is depicted by the eponymous opera by Rodolphe Lavello, untouched since the 19th Century only to be revived here once again (4th July). The Midsummer Festival is also the place for every flight of fancy. It was this spirit that saw the creation of the Fairy Queen in Progress, or the encounter of Shakespeare’s and Purcell’s works with jazz and street theatre (25th June and 26th June). Finally night falls and it is time to open your ears and be prepared to discover. During these Afters, Alice Ader will strike the comparison between Chopin and Hersant (27th June), whilst Paul O’Dette lets us listen to Lord Herbert's rare Lute Book (4th July). This is how we will wait for the next summer solstice and the arrival of the new château Hardelot Elizabethan theatre.
